A fangirl ponders
This is a "STICKY" welcome message for my "A fangirl ponders" tag. I've backdated it to stay at the top of the page.

Welcome to the place where I write about what it means to be a fangirl, about my fandoms -- mostly Queer as Folk, and a little Xena: Warrior Princess -- and issues related to fandom, meta, discussion of the writing process, and other fangirly topics. Please be aware I write about sex, I'm a dyke, I use whatever language I feel most serves my needs even if the words do have four letters, and this is not intended to be a place for children to play.

Fa la la la la la la la
Well, the Solstikwanzanukkamas season is drawing to a close... [info]orlith and I are having a lovely holiday. We saw the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus last night, this morning we went with some of my family to the cemetery to put flowers on my mother's grave, and this evening he came with me to my family dinner. His comment: That my family was amazingly not dysfunctional. No drama, no tears, no yelling, no booze.

And Travis put together the trampoline I got my 4 year old nephew. Is he not awesome?

Hope everyone who celebrates this particular winter holiday had a wonderful one!

Now, I have some drabbles to type!

Love,

Xie

metafandom and its discontents
There's been a big discussion going on in Greater Fandom over the community/asylum [info]metafandom, which puts out a list of links to interesting meta discussions across all the journaling sites every few days.

Nutshell: They aren't linking to much meta lately. Why?

I found a lot of interesting people to follow by reading [info]metafandom, and read some truly thought-provoking discussions. And I used to submit my stuff to them from time to time, and they would link to it, which I enjoyed.

But the last three or four times I submitted a link, either mine or someone else's, either QAF-specific or "big picture" fandom meta, it was just ignored. I never knew if they just didn't like it, or didn't get  it, or what the problem was.

I have nothing profound to add. I just assumed its moderators were in an echo chamber and didn't want minor fandoms, or maybe just didn't care for what I had to say, or possibly that moderator interest had waned and people's submissions were not being looked at anymore. I'm not an insider in that world and honestly can't say what happened, or why, or really, even when.

But I do miss how it used to be, and miss seeing my stuff get linked to. I hope all this discussion results in a more diverse and vibrant [info]metafandom experience for us all.

ETA: Just checked, and the last post of mine linked to from [info]metafandom was last April... this one.

The indomitable (holiday) spirit of queers everywhere
Hi there! I've been thrilled at the number of drabbles posted in my Gusmas Drabble Celebration that I'm guest-hostessing at [info]qaf_drabbles. As you know, I'm donating a dollar for every drabble posted there before the deadline of New Year's Day, to the Ali Forney Center for LGBT youth.

It's a good cause, and one that I feel resonates with our fandom for many reasons. I gave to them last year, too, in honor of the fandom that's given so much to me.

Tonight I read this post by the director of the Ali Forney Center, and it made me want to turn my bank account upside down for these kids. So even if all you can come up with is a single drabble, drop by the community and share it with us there. It's for the best cause of all: helping a kid survive a cold winter's night:

A few months ago a man named Anthony reached out to me to tell me a terrible story. He knew of a teen in upstate New York whose family learned he was gay and threw him out. A few days later the boy tried to return home, only to be told that if he returned again his father would kill him and bury him in the backyard. The boy tried to survive in near bye towns eating out of garbage cans and sleeping in parking lots. Anthony was the last person who saw the boy alive; Anthony was the train conductor who slammed on the brakes when the boy jumped in front of his train, ending his life.

When I first began to work with homeless teens in the mid 1990's I met a gay boy who had nowhere to stay. We sent him to what at that time was the one youth shelter in NYC, Covenant House, a large Roman Catholic Shelter. The first night he stayed there he was placed in a dorm with about 15 other kids. After he fell asleep, the other kids in the dorm gathered around him and urinated on him to show their hatred and unwillingness to share their dorm with a gay person. I cannot tell you how many similar stories I have heard over the years, of LGBT kids being gay-bashed, humiliated and abused at Covenant House. Back in the 90's most LGBT kids felt safer sleeping on the streets.

I feel strongly that we, the LGBT Community, who call on each other to come out of the closet, have to be there to protect teens who come out only to be rejected and abandoned. I am very proud of the work that the Ali Forney Center now does to protect these kids and help them heal the trauma they've been put through, and help them rebuild their lives. We offer housing, food, clothing, medical care, mental health treatment, and vocational and educational assistance. We, and the many people who support us and volunteer for us become an extended family, who give these kids the love and support their own families cannot give.

Last month was big for us; we opened a new shelter, increasing the number of youths we are able to house to 58 per night. It actually seems like a miracle when you consider that we were able to expand even though we lost $450K this year in government support. If we have a saint in heaven watching over us, it must be Bea Arthur, who left us $300K in her estate! I was actually frightened we would be forced by the funding cuts to shut down before Bea came to our rescue.

The biggest miracle for me though is seeing our kids thrive. Right now 16 of the kids staying with us are attending college, and over 20 have found jobs. One young woman who has been living with us for two years and is ready to move out on her own is fielding offers to work in the research departments of Stanford and Brown Universities! Over a thousand kids have stayed with us since we opened in 2002, and a great many are now living proudly on their own.

And while I know times are incredibly hard right now for so many of you, if you're one of the lucky ones, consider donating directly. I just did.

Love,

Xie

The glamorous life of a fic writer
It's probably a bad sign that I'm trying to find out what TIME the gift exchange fics are due on the 22nd, isn't it? I mean, we're down to counting HOURS here. Minutes, even.

And Rebel is transmitting furiously to me from heaven, so I have to find time to type for him, too... and SOON.

Anyone know of a fund for fan fic writers so I can quit my jobs and just do that all day? Let me know ASAP!

Wii?
I'm thinking of buying a Wii thingy for my nephews for Christmas. Is anyone up on it that could walk me through what I need to buy, to have a basic set up for two kids? I'm trying to figure it out and I'm totally lost.

Thanks for any help!

Thoughts on frozen water falling from the sky and accumulating on the ground
Honestly, why do people live where it snows?

Do not misunderstand. I like snow. I like it very much when I'm sitting by the fire at a ski lodge, sipping hot cocoa and reading a good book and waiting for room service to bring my dinner. I like it when it's drifting down romantically, settling softly all along the needles of the evergreens, and making the holiday lights on charming cottages sparkle. I like it when I'm out in it playing with my nephews, throwing snow balls and making snow men.

I do not like it when it makes cars slip all over roads and closes down airports and prevents one from doing what one is supposed to be doing, such as coming home or working.

The bottom line is this, I'm back from a trip, the journey home massively sucked, and I'm so tired I cannot move.

Did you miss me? I missed you!

Coco Before Chanel: Thumbs down from me
Cross-posted at [info]femme_asylum.

Really really did not like "Coco Before Chanel." Audrey Tautou is gorgeous and I could have looked at her all day, but I found her character's motivations unfathomable, and I had no sense at all where Chanel's great talent and style came from, nor was there any sense of the force in design she would one day become.

This was nothing but an overblown romance that somehow reduced everything she did to being about some guy. Nauseating. I HATED it.

Beautiful, yes. But blech.

I wish someone would make the Chanel film that is in my head. Because this is DEFINITELY not it.

CHANEL!
I can't handle the crowds on Black Friday, and besides, my holiday shopping, such as it is, is done. (We're buying for the kids only this year, due to the financial problems of one of my brothers).

So my sisters in law and I are going to see "Coco Before Chanel," while my brothers and their sons do their manly, boy-ly thing without us. And then this evening, [info]not_yet_defined is doing a marathon of 101-102 and 512-513 over at [info]qaf_marathons, so that's what I'll be doing when I get home!

See you then!

What the Gusmas?
First, Happy Thanksgiving to all!

A couple of new fandom friends don't know the origin of the name of the current celebration in [info]qaf_drabbles , "Gusmas," so I thought I'd explain.

Once upon a time, four fangirls wrote a story together, and the unbelievable [info]url_girl illustrated it. (Well, we didn't write it, exactly -- it was divinely inspired, so it might be better said we channeled it.)

It was the story of Assbaby!Jesus (Gus for short), and of course, it's his birth we celebrate during the Solstikwanzanukkamas Season, which runs from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day.

Be warned if you choose to read this fic; you're sure to end up on the bus to the hot place if you do.
