A fangirl ponders
This is a "STICKY" welcome message for my "A fangirl ponders" tag. I've backdated it to stay at the top of the page.

Welcome to the place where I write about what it means to be a fangirl, about my fandoms -- mostly Queer as Folk, with a little Glee and Xena: Warrior Princess -- and issues related to fandom, meta, discussion of the writing process, and other fangirly topics. Please be aware I write about sex, I'm a dyke, I use whatever language I feel most serves my needs even if the words do have four letters, and this is not intended to be a place for children to play.

Tonight: Season Three Marathon: There's nothing noble about being poor
Hi! Tonight at [info]qaf_marathons, we're watching Queer as Folk episode 305. Ethan loses the Heifitz. and Brian gives Ethan valuable career advice in the park. Also, an unfortunate masturbatory interlude with Michael that we'll just fast forward through, shall we?

Come join us as our Season Three marathon comes even closer to the magic of 308 and the most historic reunion since Germany. 11 PM ET/8 PM PT, be there or who knows? Ethan might win and Brian and Justin won't EVER GET BACK TOGETHER, and it would be YOUR FAULT!

But if you absolutely can't, don't worry, you can drop by anytime during the week, too. :)

See you there!

Love,

Xie

The Blaine Anderson-Brian Kinney Connection

The list of ways in which Glee's Blaine Anderson is absolutely nothing like Queer as Folk's Brian Kinney is a long one, and includes almost every personality trait, virtue, and fault I can think of.

There is, however, one major way in which they're alike, and it's this: Their most devoted fans are absolutely incapable of allowing the slightest fragment of blame to fall on either of them for anything they do, and are correspondingly prone to condemning the people who hurt them far out of proportion to any canonical evidence that either was actually hurt in the first place.

Queer as Folk example: Lindsay telling Brian to go to the White Party instead of staying for her wedding. Brian didn't want to go to the wedding. He said so forty or fifty thousand times, in graphic detail. When he finally relents and tells her he'll go, she also relents, and tells him to go to the White Party and have a great time.

Brian skips happily down the stairs to go dance and fuck, and the Brian-worshipping fandom promptly attacked Lindsay for cruelly rejecting Brian's apparently tender and fragile attempt at showing friendship -- a cruel rejection for which there is not one iota of supporting evidence in canon.

I am constantly seeing the same thing with Blaine. I can't remember exactly when I first noticed it, but it was particularly striking during "Big Brother," when the bootstrapping of explanations for everything wrong in Blaine's life was dazzling. And right now, of course, it's going on with the promos for the next episode, in which Brittany bans hair gel from the prom and tells Blaine, in typical ditzy fashion, that she doesn't like the way he looks.

You'd think Blaine was a puppy and Brittany had garotted him.

I suppose I could be wrong, but my guess is Blaine isn't going to give two moment's thought to what she said. Nor is it the first mean thing Brittany has said (she took Rachel down pretty hard a time or two, and she was frequently a "mean girl" in Season One).

What's more, Blaine himself was pretty nasty to Sam when Sam came back to New Directions, and he did more than make a context-less remark about someone's looks; he accused Sam of being a whore.

Now, I love Blaine and Brian a lot. I don't require that my real life friends and family be perfect before I love them, and I don't need my fictional characters to be perfect, either.

Apparently, however, some fans do. Because the mere suggestion that either of their guys even has a flaw, or that anyone might be justified or, at least, not be damned to the fires of hell, for anything bad they might have done to their heroes, sends them into such a frenzy of ret-conning and bootstrapping and sheer backstory-inventing that they often seem to have constructed an entire new character and show all their own -- and one that varies a great deal from the show the rest of us watch.

I mean, I saw some tortuous meta the other day about how Blaine needed his gel because of his PTSD from getting bashed at his school dance.

I seriously, seriously fault Glee for giving us what sounds like a severe gay-bashing in the backstory of a character and then doing jack shit with it. And I hope we do learn more about it, and it's not just some kind of random factoid to explain a ten second hesitation in accepting Kurt's prom invitation last year, and why he didn't like Kurt's kilt.

But as of this moment, we don't have anything in canon to suggest that Blaine needs to be handled with extra care around any sort of school dance, nor that Blaine is upset at the gel ban for any reason other than the sartorial. Even if we do end up being given that, there's also zero canonical evidence (so far) that Brittany knows about his past, nor that she meant anything rational by her gel ban, nor even what she meant about not liking the way he looks. I mean, she thinks Joe is a girl. Who knows that the world looks like to Brittany S. Pierce?

And even if it was mean, was it truly meaner than a dozen other things that have happened on Glee that didn't involve Blaine, about which these same fans had no opinion or reaction?

Anyway, just venting. I've never changed a Brianite's mind and I'm sure the Blainers will prove equally immune to my persuasive skills. But I still say Brian and Blaine don't need to be perfect to be loved, and they're not perfect, and the people in their lives are also not perfect, and don't need to be for Brian and Blaine to love them.

Or for us to love them all.

The Best, by Xie...
I wrote this fic a long time ago, but I've searched and searched my journals and my fix index and I simply can't find it anywhere. So it's either in a community somewhere, or I never posted it, or... I just have no idea! I was reminded of it tonight during the marathon when we were discussing all the ugly guys Brian tricks with.

ETA: Thanks to [info]flamencanyc, I found it... here is the original post.

No More Ugly Naked Guy

Has there ever been a crossover funnier and more in-character for both sets of characters than this brilliant little Friends x Queer as Folk gem from LJ's darksylvia?

When good fic is bad
Have you ever noticed that even extremely well-written fics can make you want to gouge out your eyes?

And to avoid all drama, this is a story that was recc'd to me off the journals, and I've never heard of nor interacted with the author in my life. Just apalled at the meta embedded in the story, and particularly the insane characterization of Justin, who as you know is a weak self-destructive basket case who everyone pities.

Blech.

Brian/Justin romance poll!
I asked my IJ flist to nominate all the Brian/Justin scenes they thought were the most romantic, and I've compiled almost all of them into this poll so we can select one most romantic scene from each season for a FUN project I'm working on with maybe742 to find THE ultimate most romantic Brian/Justin scene of all time.

I edited the nominees just a bit, as a couple of the scenes weren't really romantic as much as they were sweet or hot (I even disqualified one of my own nominees for that reason, LOL, so it was fair. I swear it!).

You'll note there is no Season One; that's because the Prom scene, starting when Brian arrives and ending at the kiss at the Jeep, was the only nominee from Season One, and thus, it's going to the finals.

So please, vote for your favorites from Seasons Two-Five in the poll below!

Everything is QAF -- still
I have a doctor's appointment this morning, and her office number in her building is 110. And I was putting the address into my GPS, and I caught myself thinking, "I don't need to put in the suite number, I'll remember that -- hotel sex."

Most romantic scene?
I've thought a lot about it, and decided that "I want you safe" is the most romantic moment in QAF, even more romantic than the prom or the proposal.

The reason is this: Brian really let his guard down in a big way to tell Justin that he wanted him to be safe because he, Brian, wanted him in his life. That's a very different thing than the usual safe sex lecture.

And he said it while in the midst of a very non-romantic, non-tender fuck, which contradicted Justin's tendency toward romanticism with real love.

Anyway, what do you think is the most romantic Brian and Justin scene?

JOB... over!
I am now officially done with the job I hated. I feel so free, and not only that, but I have a weekend of NO WORK. Zero. Not any. Plus, one of my clients offered me a small increase on my contract that will more than cover my insurance payment under COBRA! It's like a sign from the universe, isn't it?

Oh, I feel ficcish, I really do. Because I think my poor writing muses have just been SLEEP-DEPRIVED!

I also want to thank everyone for being so encouraging and happy for me about this job situation. Especially since I know a lot of you could easily think that complaining about too much work in this economy is a privileged thing to do. But no one did. You all are wonderful!

So, anything going on in your lives I could return the favor about? Or at least, are you doing anything fun this weekend?

Love,

Xie

FREE!
Letter of resignation sent this morning, my supervisor responded with grace and regret, and it looks like we can wrap up the transition in a week (I hope). I am SO FUCKING RELIEVED.

My first act of celebration is going to be finishing Directions. I swear it on REBEL'S GRAVE!

Wherein life teaches Xie a lesson, and things get better
Oh, my life.

Personal blah blah blah... )

In other news, I still love fandom! I realize that QAF fandom activity on IJ is almost nil, has slowed to a trickle on LJ, and most of us keep up in other ways now. But today while I was doing my taxes I had the CD of Brian/Justin vids that Bunny made for Xiefest on while I worked, and I actually went over to Tumblr and had to laugh at the adorable little Glee fangirls getting all worked up over the ugly shipper wars, and tell them, if you only KNEW what a TRUE ugly shipper war looked like! (And if you're on Tumblr, this is me: Xie on Tumblr.)

Tell me how you're doing, and if you're still doing any fandom stuff anywhere else? I miss you all!

Love,

Xie
